Diary Entry for 9/22/1975

Administrative Board meeting, 8 PM. 9 there. All apportionments paid for year. Merrill and I went. Wrote Mrs. Beardsley. Patty called to say Marty Rudes, (31 last Thursday, September 15), was killed near city this morning. Truck hit him.

Diary Entry for 9/24/1975

Rev. Johnson, wife, and son moved into Frank Payne’s house from Briar Hill. Rainy. We went to funeral home for Marty Rudes, 31. So many flowers. I went to Rebekah’s. Diane elected NG, Martha VG. Merrill stayed at Bills.

Marty’s funeral, 11 AM. Church full. Some in fellowship room. We went to cemetery. Rained all day. Jim came alone. Couldn’t get baby sitter for girls. Sent 4-H reports except Jr. Leader’s. No blanks. Brenda and boys here in PM. Cheryl had Tupperware party but I didn’t go. Martin Rudes called in evening.

4-H talent show. Lisa, Donna, Alison, and Laura performed. Laura got blue. Ruth and Anne went with us. Watertown and County declared State of Emergency because of rain. A lot of city streets flooded. Martin Rudes and Kay’s sister, DiCrisafi [?], here in evening. Got Dr. Pinkerton’s bill. $34 for 2 visits.

Ecumenical meeting, CEC, 6:30, covered dish. Very nice. About 65 present. Catholics our guests. Celebration group from Holy Family sang. Merrill took Boots to rabies clinic in evening. Helped set up tables in PM. Merrill mowed part of lawns.

Merrill finished mowing lawns. 4-H here. Election of officers. All members here. 14 of them. Boxed and took home cookies for sale. Sent $34 to Dr. Pinkerton, Kingston, Canada. Wrote Mary. 14 Rebekah’s had memorial service at Mills for Carrie Fike, 91.

Mary and girls put up 4-H display window at Donna’s shop. Garden projects. I cleaned and waxed around rugs, and kitchen floor. Aunt Maude called to say Ida Petrie, 46, died of heart attack. Merrill cut wood.

Communion Sunday, 75 out. We went out to Mom’s. Had dinner there. Ken’s came up. Brought lard. She got 19 pounds. Bill and Vi here in evening. We stopped at Marg and Roy. Marg’s birthday. Marg gave me crabapples. We got pears and potatoes.

Wrote Beulah Hall. Jim’s here in PM and supper. Patty made 3 pair of slacks, maternity. Jill had shots. Made her uncomfortable and sore. We went to funeral parlor for Ida Petrie. Mastitis control guys here. Lots wrong.

Got blue award, 4-H window. UMW, Mrs. Gladys Barane guest speaker, about 30 there. Very nice. Merrill and Boots went to city for milking machine pump. Got used one at Bisnetts for $125. Bible Study. Peggy and girls here in evening for cookies. Marie and Lorraine picked for Montreal trip.

4-H Achievement Night, General Brown. All went but Judy and Nora. Laura won 2nd place at talent show. Lynn’s and Judy drove also. Merrill and Boots went to Ennis’s for manure spreader apron, $125.57. Had winter tires put on at Agway. One tire was worn.

Rainy and cold all day and evening. Very foggy in morning. We went to church. Bob and Joyce Griffin in charge. Very good. Roger and Joanne Rappole and children here for weekend at Lila’s and Alice’s. Came to church. The Cameron’s not at church. Laity Sunday.

Jim’s here for lunch and supper. Kenny, Brenda, Kim and Jeffrey here in evening. Jim, Pat, Brenda and Kenny went over to Martin’s awhile. Patty made navy slacks. I went to Bible Study with Ruth. Men dug beets.

Merrill cut and drawed wood. Boots and I went to Philadelphia for groceries. Cleaned house. Washed and cooked beets to can. We went to city in evening for iron pills. I got black print jersey at Westons, $5.99. Vern’s called. Mary H here.

Vern’s eye appointment, Dr. Scanlon. Everything OK. His eyes haven’t changed in 10 years. They got here about 5:45. Left at 8:30. June has teachers conference in Syracuse in morning. Merrill drawed wood. Got bill from Kingston hospital, $28.80. Made cheese cake.

Canned 7 quarts carrots. Merrill dug rest of garden stuff. Carrots, glads. Payne’s had house raising today. Put up frame and roof. Cold and windy all day. Washed clothes. Got David Hanson and Linda Hough wedding invitation.

Rained all day. We went to church. Joyce got sign for CEC for us. cost $8 to paint and letter. Mr. LaSalle. We went to Mrs. Beardsley in PM. She gave her smoking stand that was her husband’s to Mrs. Little. They bought it years ago.

Charge Conference, Evans Mills, 7 PM. covered dish. We just went for meeting. Not many there. Rev. Wood in charge. Mr. Ball led devotions. We went to city and to Jim’s. Took Jolie Halloween costume and Jill dog. We put up UM Christian Ed Center sign on CEC. Name picked Nov. 27, ‘72, Rev. Blankenship.

Rebekah’s Installation. 72 there. Vi, Esther, and I on committee. Bay staff installed. I went up to help in AM. Merrill went to Lafargeville for points for tractor and put them on in PM. Merrill went to Antwerp.

Went up to hall and helped Vi and Esther clean up kitchen. Got groceries. Sure tired today. Didn’t sleep because of leg cramps all night. Merrill and Boots went to Mills. Merrill cemented cellar wall. Beautiful day, 70°. Sent Steve $5 check.

Vern’s go to Massachusetts this weekend. Jim goes hunting. Another beautiful day, 74°. Merrill cleaned cellar. Wrote Mrs. Beardsley. Sent UMW poem to Mrs. Bellinger at Theresa. We went to Islander’s Concert at Philadelphia High School. A great show. Tracy Robertson, leader.

Steve’s 11th birthday. Lorraine, Lisa, Nora, Marie and I met to plan 4-H projects. Met at Igloo in AM. I made cookies and donuts. Merrill finished cleaning cellar. Washed my hair in evening. Rained some. Very warm all day.

No mail, no school. PNG’s at Margaret Waters. I didn’t go. Patty and girls here for supper. Jim is up in the woods hunting with Kenny. Merrill cut wood. I fell in kitchen with Jill. No one hurt. Elaine and Tammy went to Gouverneur to live.

Election. We voted at 1:15. Numbers 105 and 106. I went to Bible Study. Jim’s here for supper. Jim brought out cement mixer and bikes to store. UMW in evening at Esther Taylor’s. 14 out. A good meeting.

4-H here. Oriental supper. 9 here for supper. Brancatella’s, Lamica’s and Jackie not here. Very warm. Merrill fixed threshold at parsonage. Jennifer Bush joined 4-H. Called Aunt Maude. She and Cheryl and Marion are going to Gilson’s tomorrow.

Aunt Maude, Cheryl, Marion went to Gilson Strader’s in Ottawa. Linda Hough and David Hanson’s wedding at Ellisburg. A beautiful wedding and reception. Fire Hall. Very large. Rained hard in PM but warm 70°. We gave them electric chime clock. We didn’t to up to Mom’s. Sawyer family at church. We didn’t go.

A beautiful day, 74°. We went to church. David Johnson rode home with us. His bike had a flat tire. We went for ride in PM, to Dexter and city. Lamon’s not home. Got bushel of apples at Seaway gardens. Jim, Olive, Elgin and Carmy Bowman and Mr. and Mrs. Sequin here in PM.

Got letter from Beulah Hall. She sent Merrill IOOF Secret Word Key. Washed clothes. Cooked squash for Agway supper. Cleaned oven in evening. Merrill and Boots went to bank, Philadelphia and Theresa. Very stormy off and on all day. Terrible wind in evening. Lots of damage.
