Diary Entry for 7/20/1998

Rained some early this morning. A very hot day 83°. Merrill went to day care. I called Philadelphia Medical Center to report on Merrill’s Seroquel medication results. I washed white clothes. Jim and Walt Prow came out and took our car to Cliff’s to get it inspected. They didn’t have time to stay for supper. Merrill picked a few green beans from his garden for first.

Another hot day. Nice breeze. Merrill went to day care. Jim is on TV this morning about his neighborhood watch meeting last night. I sent back statements (checking) to Social Security office. Clark and Vivian home to mow lawns.

Partly cloudy. Not as warm. Rained in evening. Windy 81° Merrill home today. Norma here to clean. Juanita and Donnie here for dinner. Left about 5 PM. Donnie on vacation. Goes back to Indiana Sunday morning. Lyla came over. A nice day together. Bill Gliesner’s wife Carmal, 43 killed in tractor accident over here working on school athletic field with Bill last night at 11:30 PM. She was riding on fender. We heard all the action. Crystal called in evening looking for Juanita and Donnie. Fern Pheherbor, (?) 90 is dead. Lyla said her son Jerry bought a pair of ostrich for $80 each. Jim and Walt here in evening. Brought my pills.

Cooler. Great. Quite windy. 73°. Merrill went to day care. I washed clothes. Woman was here taking census. Merrill didn’t find his nice white cap today. Jim got it for him. He loved it. There was a shoot out at the US Capital building this afternoon. 2 police officers killed. One tourist injured. Gunman wounded.

Still cooler nice. Good to sleep. Up to 75° in PM. Merrill upset in evening. Trying to get the chain locks off the doors. We had popcorn in evening. I watched a movie on TV. Merrill paced the floors.

Nice day. Breezy 76°. We didn’t go to church. Merrill slept in our bed with me most of the night. First time in a bed for him in months. He took the padlock off the kitchen door. I didn’t miss it until this morning Now he can’t remember anything about it or where it is. Jolie called from work at 6:30 PM. Jim and Walt stopped in to see Jolie as we talked. I watched another good movie this PM. Merrill outside most of the day. Today would have been Don’s 75th birthday. Vern called in evening. Dan, Robin and Lydia here this weekend. Robin isn’t going to teach this year.

A nice day. Merrill went to day care. Vern and June and the Jackson’s from Camden leave at 8 AM for trip to Vermont until Thursday. I wrote Dan and Robin. I sent him clipping of kayak weekend on Black River. Also sent wedding decline to Pat and Rebecca. Jim came out in PM and mowed lawns. They look great.

Thunder storm at 2:30 this morning. Merrill went to day care. I cleaned dining room closet. Chad Dudley here in PM. Dorothy LaClair, Evelyn Shippee, and Arlene Decker (Barker’s girls) here in PM. First we have seen them in years. So great to see them. All in their 70’s now. Jim picked Merrill up at day care and brought him home so he could see them. Zackary called from West Point in evening. He’s getting home sick but won’t be home for two weeks yet. Jolie called. She got another job in coffee shop in mall. Jill has told Jim M she isn’t going to Colorado with him.

Cooler. Nice. I called Lyla. She will take me to city Monday and Wednesday. Norma H here to clean. Pauline R called in evening. He has been at Art and Doris’s for a few days helping them move. Art hurt his back July 17th and is in bed. Goes to chiropractor for treatment. I trimmed Merrill’s hair in evening.

Cool sunny. Merrill went to day care. They forgot him until I called them. It was 10 AM when they got here. I washed Merrill’s work clothes and PJ’s. I talked with Doris and Pauline. I gave Pauline a watermelon pickle recipe. I called Lyla and we ended up going over to Art and Doris’s. Art in pain. There new home is just beautiful. So large. Jim called in evening. He was at Jolie’s. They were having Chinese good for supper. Zackary is coming home tonight for weekend.

A real cool morning 43° but a just beautiful day. I washed white clothes. Jolie, Zack and Shawn Michael here all PM and for supper. Jolie took me to store for groceries. They left about 5:30 PM.

Nice, warm, sunny Sunday 80°. We didn’t go to church. Wayne called Sunday morning but we didn’t have time to get ready. Vern called in PM. They had a good trip to Vermont. Steve had a kidney stone. He passed it after a couple days. Merrill upset in evening as usual. Started over losing his cap. Jim came out on his cycle in evening.

A sunny day. 80° Dr. Richmond 2 PM. Pressure left 18, right 13. Merrill went to day care. It was 9:10 when the bus got here. They found his white cap. Lyla took me to city in PM. We shopped at Kinney’s. I got power strip for living room. She came in house for awhile when we got back. I got most of my order from Blairs. All very nice. We got cutest pictures of Lydia Grace. (6 months) also a family picture of Robin, Dan, and Lydia. Also a letter from Robin.

Another hot day. 88° high. Dr. LaPoint. 1:35 PM. Lyla took me to city in PM. Dr. LaPoint wants me to have a bone density scan so I had it done on first floor in Professional Building. Merrill went to day care. Ice Cream social at church. We didn’t get to go again this year. Jim called in evening. He was on his way home from Adams.

Raining lightly off and on all day. 72°. Norma here to clean. She went to store for me. We got a turkey sub for supper. A C-5 jet plane landed at Fort Drum today. It is the 2nd largest military plane in the world. Russia has the largest plane. We heard it but didn’t go out side to see. Why it sounded different than the usual jet plane.

Raining some all day. 73° high. Merrill went to day care. Sue and Glenda here. They took me down to see their house. Beautiful what they have done. Glenda has her driving permit. Boschock’s are leaving for Arizona in the morning for a week. She said Marquella Landas is married. Jimmy Collins is getting married tomorrow. I sent Art a card. I washed bedding and sleeping clothes. Merrill’s Aricept for his Alzheimer’s cost $115.02 for a months supply. He has been on it over a year. I sent for cleaner belts.

Hot and humid. 88° high. We didn’t wake up until 8 AM. Merrill didn’t settle down until 3 AM. I’m tired today. Not much work accomplished. Too hot. I got card from Linda Beuette from blind association. She will stop by Thursday. I went through papers looking for list of Pastors at Philadelphia UMC. There have been 58 to date. Rev. Pilbeam was here the longest for ten years. Vern called in evening. He has new cell phone. 529-0120. Kristen spent Thursday and Friday at Vern’s. They took a trip around the Islands Thursday. They helped at Steve’s today (Saturday) fixing front door and lawn.

Another hot day. 88°. We went to church. Wayne and Nancy came after us with Anne’s car. The electric door didn’t work on theirs. Sue called from work. Good to hear from her. I called Jolie. She and Jim called. Jim and Walt, Jolie, Shawn Michael, and Jessica here. Jim took us all out to lunch at Philadelphia Restaurant. They all left about 5 PM. Vern called in evening.

Rainy and very humid. Merrill went to day care. Jim came out and mowed our lawns this morning before the rain got here. We got note from Nancy. They are coming sometime between September 4-10th. Dorothy Williams, 90, Natural Bridge, died yesterday. She has been a Rebekah’s for 76 years. She’s a member of Philadelphia Lodge now. Dr. LaPoint’s office called and said I have Osteoporosis. She will start treatment my next visit. I’m to keep taking my calcium and vitamin D.

Cooler. Sunny. Merrill went to day care. I washed Merrill’s dark clothes. I wrote notes to Dan’s and also Nancy Neil. Shari Monroe from office for the Again was here for interview. Zackary got home from West Point late tonight.

Temperature down to 46° overnight. A nice, sunny day. Lyla called to say Pauline called her to tell her Little Winnie Haggerty died of a heart attack. Linda Beyette here. Her regular September visit a little early. Jim called in PM. He said Zack got home last night. Norma was here to clean. She went to the store for me. Merrill scraped old paint off garage. Hope to get it painted some day.

A nice sunny day. 78°. Merrill went to day care. Chad here in PM. I made two pumpkin pies. First one in a long time. It’s so good to be able to see things and read a recipe. We got notice they are giving us back the SSI they took away back in 1994. Gave us $129.00. We will get $3.00 a month more starting next month in checks. $1.50 each.

A great summer day. A nice breeze. I washed white clothes. We had first cukes from Merrill’s tow plants. He picked them too small. Nancy called us about going to church with them tomorrow.

A sunny day. Rained during the night. We went to church. 22 out. Went with Wayne and Nancy. A nice service. We sang favorite hymns picked by each person. We picked “When the Roll is Called up Yonder”. Merrill’s grandfather used to hold him on his lap as a small boy and sang it to him. I picked “In the Garden”. It was my mother’s favorite and also mine. A lonesome day. No company. Merrill real mixed up all day.

Hot and muggy. 83°. Some rain in PM. Merrill went to day care. Jim called in evening. He was on his way home. He has bought another property south of Adams with 3 trailers on it. Jolie, Zack, and Shawn Michael have gone camping for a few days. I sent 2 orders for beauty items. The other for vitamins. Received belt for cleaner. Also got air freshener.

Cold wind and cooler. 63° at noon. Tina here. She told Merrill to sleep with his feet up. I got carmel colored skirt from Blairs. 2 pair of pants to come yet. Pauline called in evening. So good to talk with her. I miss being able to talk with Merrill anymore as he gets so mixed up. He doesn’t like me to talk on the phone but wants me to talk with him instead. Pauline and Lyla met Jean Monroe Parker for lunch at Longways today.

A real cold morning. Down to 42° over night. Sunny day. 70° high. Merrill went to day care. It was 9:20 when they picked him up. I washed Merrill’s clothes. Also washed two of my navy dress outfits. Vivian T called to say Becky had her baby yesterday. 5 pounds, 2 ounces. Nick name will be Casey. They were home to mow their lawns. Lyla was here in PM. I talked with Vi. Martha not as good. Cries a lot.

Down to 43° again. Nice today. Norma here to clean. She brought us a lot of vegetables from her garden. Tomatoes, cucumbers, cabbage, sweet corn and a jar of sunshine pickles she made. Corn tasted so good. First we have had. I made a scalloped potatoes and pudding. I ate too much for super. President Clinton ordered bombing of Afghanistan and Sudan for the terrorist bombings last week. Jim called in evening He was on his way home from Explorer meeting.

Warmer 77°. Merrill went to day care. I sent Anniversary card to June and Vernon. Also sent wedding card and check $15.00 to Pat and Rebecca Hagan. I sent for winter jacket to Blairs with returned check from them. They didn’t have summer slacks and peddle pushers.

Nice day. Warm. I made white cake. Also washed white clothes. Jim, Jolie Zack, and Shawn Michael here for supper. Jolie cut Merrill’s hair. Also Jim’s. Shown Michael wiped the dishes for me. He is a dear little boy. He calls Zack “dad” all the time now. Jim and Shawn Michael took me to the store. Vern called in evening when we got home from store. We got card from Colorado from Juanita and Kyle. They are having a good time. Rebecca Lee Hare and Edward Patrick Hagan’s wedding 1 PM. We didn’t get to it.

Cloudy in AM. Rained in PM. We went to church. Good service. Wayne and Nancy came after us. I called Elgin and Carmi in PM. Used new 11 cent a minute call number. Both well. Vern and June left for Massachusetts for vacation until Friday. Juanita and Kyle got home from Colorado today. My spirits much better today. Yesterday was a bad day for me. I’ve got to get out more. I called Lyla. She is taking me to city tomorrow. Jolie, Shawn Michael and Jim called in evening. Jim was a Jolie’s.

Thunder, lightning, wind and rain most of night. Cloudy and partly sunny in AM. Thunder storms at supper time. Power off in lots of places after night storms. Hurricane in Texas and another one “Bonnie” headed for Carolina’s. Merrill went to day care. Lyla took me to city. Got paint for garage. Got robe for Jim’s birthday. Also PJ’s for Merrill at Sears. Went to Pharmhouse. Ate lunch at Silvers. Got home about 1:30. We also went to Hills. I got potato kettle.

A nice day finally. Merrill went to day care. Chad Dudley here in PM. I washed clothes. I used “Meadow Mole” battery scare tool on side lawn. All PM. Lots of mole homes out there. Hope it works.

Summer hot. Hurricane Bonnie still going in the Carolina’s. Moving very slowly. Not as bad as expected so far. Lots of damage but no deaths. Norma here to clean. Jim called in evening. He was on his way to Jolie’s. He had had his Explorer meeting. He sys he will come out and paint the garage. Norma said here was two Amish horse and buggies at Big M store at Philadelphia this PM. Amish around Philadelphia drive cars.

Sunny, very warm day. Up to 82°. Merrill went to day care. I put wood sealant on back patio. Hard on the back when you get old. Ha! Our phone out of order in evening. A noisy racket on it. Can’t use it. I got my vitamin order from Puritan’s Pride. Got 3 of everything for a $30 order. I’ve been getting oyster calcium form there for years.

Rained during night and this morning. Nice later. Sun, Windy. I managed to talk to Lyla on phone enough to have her report it. The Bell Atlantic repairman came about 1 PM. The trouble was on the line down near the corner where the wire is hanging real low. Been like that since the ice storm in January. He also put on a new ground wire and a new box. I washed white clothes.

Sunny fresh day. In 70’s. Rained hard in night. Wind. Our power off for 1 ½ hours. We went to church with Huntresses and Alice. I called Jim in morning. He’s taking this week off. Lyla was here this PM and brought me a cute picture of the twins, Kerry and Kelly taken at Walmart.

Cool. Nice sunny day. Merrill went to day care. I washed clothes. Jim came out in PM and mowed lawns. They look so nice. He was here for supper with us. I got stuff from Beauty catalog I ordered. I called Vern’s but they were out to choir practice. Vern called back later. They had a good vacation. Vern goes back to teaching tomorrow. JCC opened. 2700 enrolled. Less than last year.

Nice day. Cool sunny. Merrill slept in bed with me until 1:30 AM. First time in ages. Vern’s are going to bring a cot bed for him to put in the dining room. Tina here to see Merrill. Everything okay.

Cloudy. Raining in PM. Merrill went to day care. He didn’t want to go but I talked him into going. He slept in the bed with me all night long. I washed Merrill’s clothes. Jim’s 55 birthday. I got his birthday card and gift ready. I’ll give it to him when I see him. I called him but got his machine. He called back later. He was going to Jolie’s for supper. June and Vern are coming Saturday to paint the garage. Telephone repairman called to ask about my phone. It was working okay. Vern called in evening. Said they would be here Saturday.

Raining in morning. I called Lyla. She will take me to store tomorrow. A Swiss Air #111 plane crashed last night near Halifax, Nova Scotia with 229 aboard. All lives lost. 107 of them are Americans. Was on the way to Geneva, Switzerland. Norma here to clean.

Sunny all day. I called Jim in morning. He called me back. Merrill went to day care. Lyla took me to bank and Big M. Good to do my own shopping but I spend too much money. I washed clothes. I got new navy winter short coat fro Blairs. $29.95. Very nice. Was marked down $10. Lots of sports going on over at school. Good to hear them again. I baked a ham. Got stuff ready to go to dump.

A nice sunny day. Sunny about 72°. Vern, June, Jim, Steve, Kathy and girls Kristen and Sarah here about all day. They got so much work done for us. They painted the garage, front porch, flagpole etc. Boys took trash to dump. Vern’s brought cat bed to put in dining room. They took home Vern’s little wicker chair. Also quilt made by Grandma Carrie Tryon. June brought large dish of delicious chili and birthday cake for Jim. We gave him his birthday gift, a white robe and $100.00. I gave Steve a letter that his mother, June sent to us in 1964. A day after his birth. He was so pleased with it. I’m glad I saved it. Renee Lucida stopped by to see Jim. Jim is thinking of retiring from police department.

A great summer day. Breezy, warm 85°. We went to church. Huntress’s came after us. Jan’s last Sunday with us. 39 out. Jan has given us great services for her $40 a Sunday that is paid to substitute. We are looking forward to Rev. Jane Wagner next Sunday, her first Sunday with us. Jim, Ashley, Jolie, Shawn Michael and Erica here in PM. I talked with Zackary on phone. He has enlisted for 3 years and they will be living in Washington State. Go the middle of April. Fort Lewis.

A nice day here. Some rain in evening. No day care today so Merrill home today. I washed clothing. Terrible storms in Western Counties. Syracuse hit hard. 2 men killed on fair g rounds. State Fair canceled today. Last day. We got thunder and lightning at 2 AM. Telethon in Watertown raised $160,000. Nation wide 50 and ½ million dollars. Jim came out and mowed lawns. Here for supper. Also Jolie and Zack. Nancy, Tom, and Lori here all afternoon. Nice visit. Mark McGwire, St Louis, hit his 61st home run tying Roger Maris’s record that has held for 37 years.
