Diary Entry for 7/20/1982

Nice day but cooler. We went to city for stuff for parsonage. Got my hair cut, $3.95 with coupon. Got letters ready to send in evening. Landes’ fresh air boy arrives today. Talked with Carol, Margaret, and Abby about Barne’s picnic on Sunday.

Wrote Arlene Decker. Sent Sears $136.83 for tires. Sent $15.85 to Times. Sent ad for washer to T & C. Merrill worked at parsonage. June D and Betsy LeC painted parsonage kitchen. I baked pies and cupcakes.

Canned 7 quarts of beans and froze 1 large package. Made Herman cake and monkey bread. Kathy Paro is in hospital with nervous breakdown. Terry M. mowed her lawns. Merrill and Bill worked at parsonage.

Picnic at Matteson’s. The Barne’s last sunday here, 64 at church. Very nice. A very nice picnic, about 60 there. Ken, Eleanor, Tammy, Luke, Juanita, and Donnie came in evening to stay all night. Got here about 10:30 PM

Rained about all day. We went to Whites for stuff for parsonage. Went to fair awhile afterwards. Saw Jim and Explorers. also Esther and Kay. Vivian T. had shower for Deanne Webb in evening. Lois Lowry in hospital. Jim’s badge number is 13.

165 prisoners at Dry Hill Prison. Merrill and Bill worked at parsonage all day. Rev. Salisbury got a microwave oven. Kathy Paro didn’t get to come home from hospital. Boys came home. Nice day but cooler. School budget defeated for 3rd time.

Cloudy in morning but it got sunny. Wrote Uncle Berl. Merrill and Bill worked at parsonage. Rev. Salisbury came after me. Marilyn came over in evening and did her washing. Got letter from Vernon.

Rev. Catherine Salisbury’s first Sunday as pastor, 57 there. A just great service. Tracy sang. Matteson’s gave us glads from church. Boots is quite sick with his heart. Wrote Vern’s. Merrill mowed lawns.

Boots, age 10 died at about 5 AM under our bed. He has been a great little dog. Merrill buried him back of garage. Washed clothes. We went to city for stuff at Whites. Had tailpipe put on car, $41.78. Merrill and Bill worked some at parsonage.

Someone set fire to curtains at Gary Ashley’s during the night. Not much damage. It is so empty around the house without Boots. I made tops for girls to match their skirts. Merrill and Bill worked at parsonage. Got letter from Vern’s. Hot and muggy. Showers in evening.

We went to city for rest of stuff for parsonage, molding etc. Got door and floor at Garn’s that Rev. Salisbury bought. I got hair cut at Theresa on way home. I got white sneakers, and girdle at Pearls. Got groceries in PM.

Merrill went to dump. Worked at parsonage. Larry Compeer helped him. They laid linoleum in laundry and bathroom. I canned bread and butter pickles. Vern called in evening. Sent car insurance, $151.00. and light bill, $88.54

We got home about 8:30 PM. Went to Wolcott from Vern’s. Leslie went with us to Elmer and Melba’s. Had lunch with them. We all went to Savannah funeral home for Glenn. Vern’s at Wellsley Island craft show

Raining. Glenn Congdon’s funeral. Administrative Board meeting. Rev. Salisbury’s first one with us, 13 out. Merrill went over to parsonage and to Horton’s. Froze corn. Rained real hard in evening with thunder storms.

We went for groceries. Stopped at parsonage. It looks so nice. Merrill finished wardrobe. Looks nice in bedroom. We defrosted freezer for first time since we have been here. Merrill put 6 inch insulation in some of laundry room.

Raining again. Thunder storms in morning. Bill and Merrill worked at parsonage all day. I washed clothes. Made 2 1/2 pints strawberry jam. Made chocolate chip cookies. Cathy borrowed jumper cables.

Went for groceries. Merrill worked at wood for first. Waxed both laundry room and bathroom and washed bath mats also. Made anniversary cake for Vern and June. Nice day. Sunny all day. Got school calendar in mail. Nice.

Vern and June’s 22nd anniversary. They all came to spend night. Millicent Hale died at 9:30, Her birthday, their 53rd anniversary. Got letter from Uncle Berl. Peggy Sepko called. Carl in hospital with stroke. Doc Lowry, 68 died this morning. Merrill cleaned floors and mowed lawns.

Vern, June and Dan left for Alex Bay Craft Show at 7:30. Steve stayed here. Rev. Salisbury brought over her wash to do. Sears didn’t fix hers. Vern’s back here for supper. Dan made $200 at Bay. Merrill and Steve straightened steps. Linda was over.

Called Patty. Jim driving for scout camp. We went to church, 45 out. Nice service. Rev. Salisbury gets better each Sunday. Tracy sang. We went to Kiechle’s in PM. I went with Rebekah’s in evening for Rebekah service. June, Vern, and Dan stopped in on way back from Potsdam. Had rental car. Watched fireworks.

Millicent Hales funeral (private) 9:30 AM. We went. Amish men had service. Jacob Lapp, Mike White sang Amazing Grace. Nice service. Lois Lowry funeral 11:00 AM at church. We went. Aunt Maude went with us. A large funeral. We voted on bussing at school. It passed this time.

Jim’s 39th birthday. He is at Portaferry Scout Camp with the Explorers. We went to city for church stuff at Whites, and eye drops. Got 50# potatoes. Wrote Steve. Sent Jim card and $5.00 check.

Got foam picnic basket, 89 cents. Wrote Ken’s. Went for groceries. Windy, rainy and sunny by spells. Merrill cut wood. Airbrake laying off and cutting down to three day week because business is so bad.

Rev. Salisbury’s first wedding today. Wendy Bowers and John Bartholomew. Patty called. Kenny and Brenda Rudes have separated. Wrote Vern’s. Washed clothes. Merrill cut wood. He ran cleaner. Jim and boys break camp today.

Rev. Salisbury’s first baptism at Evans Mills. We went to church, 50 out. Jim, Pat and kids here for 3 PM dinner. They left early. Jim may work on telethon. Bob Puffer has learned he is adopted. Calvin and Dolly Congdon and granddaughter Holly here.

Merrill went to Sixbury for oil and wire for chain saw. He finished cutting wood, 13 cords. Washed clothes. Carl and Randy split last of it with their tractor splitter. Send Edith Seeley birthday card at Cedars Nursing Home
