Diary Entry for 9/11/1968

Sent $12 to Time. Pays to October 21, 1969. Merrill got chopper out and ready to use. Rainy all day. Washed Merrill’s clothes. I went to lodge. First fall meeting. Donna here in evening. She will be my assistant 4-H Leader.

Sunny day. We went to city and Fays. Saw Orin and Mildred Walts. Mildred has hurt her neck again. Mrs. Eva Kelsey from Redwood here with Amway products. Called Mom. Merrill got new work shoes at Theresa, $8. Jim got service discharge certificate in mail. Thunder storm in evening.

Friday the 13th. Rebekahs State Pres. made official visit at Alex Bay. 10 from Philadelphia went. Leah, Martha, went to dinner also. Francis Ansted and staff looked nice. Alice LaClair went with me. Elizabeth Dunlop, Buffalo, is Pres. We mowed lawns. Jim here for supper. Wrote to Uncle Berl about Mrs. Claude Mount, 80. Funeral was yesterday.

Cactus plant blossomed in evening for second time in 11 days. Canned peaches. Jim and Patty Puffer here on cycle. Here for supper. Toby, Karen and one of her pupils here in PM. Men put up silo pipe. Boys took Star out doors. Jim Matteson here in evening. He and Toby are going to milk for us. Called Wolcott. Less called to ask us to go to Elmer’s.

We went to Wolcott for day. Had dinner at Elmer’s. Stopped at Mother’s. Didn’t see Leslie or Beula as she was working. Les at clambake. Stopped at Vernon’s. Vern finished paining house and June was canning tomatoes. Jim Matteson and Toby M did milking. We got home about 11:45 PM

We started using flag Ken’s gave us. Took our old one to Vern’s. Started chopping corn. Toby here all day long to help. A day of his vacation. I went to Past Grands at Vivian’s Myers. Very foggy coming home. 80° during day.

I got new radio from Spiegel, $35. Enjoyed evening listening to Short Wave. Merrill chopped two loads of corn. Foggy in evening again. Washed clothes, cleaned. Mr. & Mrs. Gary Pastor had baby girl, Laura Lynn, today. Hot, 83°

4-H leaders meeting at city. Donna and I went to it. Saw Jim and Al Hurst on duty. Jim worked his days off. Very warm. 88°. Lila went to hospital. Started cleaning bathroom. Hot again today. Merrill finished corn across road.

Changed 4-H name to Ore Bed 4-H Club. Sent Reader’s Digest Christmas gifts, Hall’s, Vern’s, Jim, and us. Sent Vern card and letter for his birthday. I went to city for groceries. Merrill chopped corn. Jim and Mike here in PM. 4-H here in evening. Dennis and Kevin Demo joined

80°. I mowed two lawns. Merrill filled silo. Jim and Patty here in evening on way to drive-in. Donna H here. Subscribed for Good Housekeeping magazine for June. Merrill went to milk meeting. They all voted to sell Philadelphia milk plant. Washed and ironed in evening.

Rebekahs election of officers. Alice LaClair NG, Mary Hall VG, I’m tres. Washed woodwork in bathroom. Merrill went to Lampheres. Ordered lumber for cleaner shed and shingles for barn back. Mr. Clark stopped here. Raining in morning. Nice in PM and evening. Paid school tax $225.38

Cloudy. I went to city shopping and for groceries. Got black slacks and girdle. Merrill chopped corn. One small load left yet to do . Sun shinning in PM. I worked on 4-H reports all evening. Donna here in evening.

Merrill started plowing. Did Jim’s washing. Howard chopped standing hay for bedding. Jim here in evening for clothes. Saw old 1940 movie of Loraine’s WSCS Reorganization Meeting. We signed new charter. New year begins in January now. Beautiful day.

Brenda’s 16th birthday. Rainy. We went to city for groceries. Merrill went to Tolcott Falls for plow points and to get milk machine heads cleaned. Fried donuts and made a pumpkin pie. I saw Dorothy Hogaboom at P & C

4-H achievement night at General Brown. Sent birthday cards to Bea G and Mary. Cold and cloudy. Donna and I took kids to 4-H night. Cathy, Jeff and Kevin didn’t go. 2 Gleason kids went. Aunt Maude called to say Lila went back to hospital. pleurisy.

Bea Gehm’s birthday. Also Marg’s. 4-H US and Canada 30th anniversary dedications at Bridge. Sharon, Debby, Vernie Gleason and I put up 4-H window display at Pearls. Jim and Patty here awhile. Real hard white frost last night. Wrote Dot.

Antwerp Installations. I went. Took Lula, Elsie, Vi and Alice. Mary couldn’t go as Roy and Wilma came to say good-bye. Roy goes to Viet Nam. I went to Theresa to puT more flowers in display. Jim and Patty were here in evening. Brought out his new colored TV.

Rebekah’s. Martha, Mary and I on committee. Sandwiches, pickles and cookies. Merrill put in cement wall for shed. Washed. Nice day. I read Beulah Halls letter at Lodge. Members wrote she and Les notes. 21 of them. Mr. and Mrs. Gary Pastor here on cycle in evening while I was gone. Sent map to Melba.

I went to church meeting at 9 AM, Rev. Bird and Rev. Doliver called it. I went to city for groceries after meeting. Raining in evening. I was too tired to go to church meeting at Lafargeville with Rev H in evening. I sent Lodge letters we all wrote to Beulah and Les in Florida.

Beautiful day. I washed bedding. Cleaned and mowed lawn by house. Merrill went to Mills in AM about barn shingles. Man was here about zero bulk tank. $2100 plus 300 installed. Got barn shingles. Merrill plowed back side of barn in PM. Called 4-H office for pattern. Rock and Roll dance at Eggleston’s.

Hair appointment at 10 AM. I got perm $10. Beautiful day. Jim here in evening for shot gun to go hunting on camp tomorrow. Got letter from Melba. Lois W, Lois H, Alice, Marge, did book audit at Marguerites. Carrie and Edna there also. Got home at 1 AM

Church supper. Republican by [?] Guild. I helped in kitchen at church until 7. Mary and I went to Theresa Rebekahs Installation. Big crowd there for them, 58. Lois Hanlon and I went to Frederick Insurance to get Lodge Bond. Cost $375. Merrill finished plowing old ground. They started painting the church.

We went to church. Jim here in PM. He’s been sick with flu. Stated to go to week of Prayer and Self Denial Service at Evans Mills but car wouldn’t start. Jackie Kennedy and Aristotle Onassis married today.

Washed and ironed Jim’s clothes. We had Fred Hill come down to start car battery. Jim and Patty here for supper. We called Vern’s. I went to Past Grands at Carrie’s. Today would have been Mom and Dad’s anniversary.

3 astronauts landed safely after 11 days in space. I went up to Joyce G to plan election supper. Went into city for a few groceries. Called June about 4-H party. Washed and finished ironing. Merrill plowed. A beautiful warm day.
