Diary Entry for 5/30/1968

Cloudy about all day. Jim went golfing with Kenny. Brenda is at Girl Scout Camp. We took flowers to Dad’s grave. Shopped at Weston’s afterwards. Stopped at Mower’s on way. They were getting ready to go camping with their new trailer. Jim and Jim here for supper.

Raining. 4-H club (All members & Roger Hall) had outing with picnic at park. Visits to WOOT radio station, Sackets Harbor and Dexter Airport. Nice day. Jim and Toby here while I was gone. Jim had Linda O’s car (red VW) Got letter from Beulah H and Melba.

Dairyland Parade. Merrill mowed rest of lawns. Nice day. Jim goes to work nights 8 PM – 4 AM this month. Philadelphia Fireman’s Field Day. Jim had to work two hours on Dairyland Parade.

Had vet again for cow. Thinks she may have rabies. We went to church. Drove out to mom’s after church. Took Willabell [?] her gift. Boys were here awhile. Spent the night at Decker’s camp at Clear Lake. They got stopped on cycles by State Police at 4:30 AM on way to camp. Cow some better in evening.

WSCS at Marguerites. Rev. H brought up topic of guild and WSCS. Much discussion. Cathy here to sew. I took her home. Washed clothes. Wrote Beulah Congdon. She was in Lyon’s hospital. Merrill helped Lynn put rods in his barn.

Exchange of callers at Evans Mills. Also neighbor’s night. 54 present. Frances Amsted new D. Pres. I was given PDPP jewel by my staff. Merrill worked at Lynn’s barn. Thelma McCready [?] 41, killed near Hudson’s Left 4 children.

4-H dress judging at Antwerp. I took Donna, Cathy, Sharon, and Lorraine. Lorraine got blue, the rest got red. Sen. Robert Kennedy shot in Los Angeles. Jim off tonight. Two Jim’s, Toby, and Karen here in evening.

Got letter from June. Rev. & Mrs. Hutchinson’s 40th Wedding Anniversary. Sen. Robert Kennedy died in California at 4:44 AM our time. We planted 5 acres of corn. Two Jim’s and Jim D’s cousin here in evening. Murphy boy of Theresa drowned in evening. Jim off tonight. I have watched TV all day.

Cut my hair short in evening. Very hot with rain in PM. I went to P & C for groceries. Merrill fitted on corn ground. Jim brought his wash home while I was gone to city. They recovered the Murphy boy’s body at 8:30 AM, Wrote June and Vern. I washed car in evening. Toby Tyler called.

We got 1966, 4 door, sport sedan hardtop Caprice from Seeker Graves. $1750 difference. Got $400 for old car. Sen. Robert Kennedy’s funeral. Jim was home awhile in PM for clothes. I tailored 4 new shirts for him. Toby Tyler here in PM. Sen. Kennedy buried at 10:45 AM

Open House for Rev. and Mrs. Hutchinson’s 40th anniversary at church. About 100 out for it. 3-6 PM We went about 3:30. Florence and Gary VanCams to it. We went to church. Jim here for dinner. Had fried chicken. Mowed lawn in evening. Donna mowed one with tractor mower. Mary, Marilyn, Bob here. Also Jim M.

Raining. We went to city and Adams Center to get car insurance and license changed over. I was in Aubrey Millers fabric store that just opened. A 24 year old Pennsylvania girl was murdered in Wellsley Island last night.

Hot and muggy. Howard, Merrill and Vern went to Dick Ennis’s for baler motor. $89. for overhaul. Vern, June and boys left for home at 6 PM. I went to Lodge in evening. Only 15 out.

Cloudy day. I went to city for groceries. Got cloth for shorts. I finished Library Drive, $9.22. Rev. Myron VanOrnum [?] funeral. Ruth called to say Sharon Sinclair is in Mercy Hospital.

Sent Mom birthday card, and Sharon S. a get well card, and Margaret LaClair note. Merrill got Grandfather’s Day card from Steve and Dan. Rained about all day. Ironed Jim’s shirts and my blouses. Milking machine pump acting up. Merrill cleaned it.

Father’s Day. I gave Merrill a billfold and corn purse. We went to church. Mrs. H had reception for graduates after church. We went out to Moms for dinner. Ken’s came up also. Marge over too, Jim and Jim D came on cycles. Jim Barber was with Ken’s. Donna Hall’s birthday. She stopped by.

Mom’s 76th birthday. Wrote Uncle Berl. Gave Mom white jewelry. Merrill mowed all of lawns. Look so nice. Washed clothes. Sanford’s Corners Cemetery Calcium had meeting at Cem. at 7:30 PM Heard it on the radio.

Past Grands go to Johnnie’s Inn 6:30. 20 of us went. Nice time. I rode with Vi, Leah, Marguerite, Esther, and Vi drove. Nettie came from B. River alone. Washed and ironed. Jim here for supper. Armed robbery at McCallops garage on Route 11.

Raining in AM. Cleared in PM. We got wedding invitation from Toby and Karen. Got letter from Charlene Tryon. Toby called in evening. Mike Halkins called but Merrill was at barn. He didn’t call back.

Cloudy and cold. We went to city for groceries. Went to Bisnetts for oil for milking machine motor. Also Carl’s store. I paid NY Florist $3.50 for Sharon’s flowers. Got paint for bathroom. Jim here in evening for alpine muffler and t[?] cover. He sold it.

Indian River Graduation. Karen L. and Cathy Ashley graduated. Sent them each $2. and card, Lynn Hall’s 41st birthday. Merrill cultivated corn. I baked cookies. Washed clothes. Mrs. Art Hall fell at Lynn’s and broke her hip.

We didn’t go to church. Sunday School picnic at the church. We went for ride to Cranberry Lake. Ate picnic lunch at State Park there. Jim here for supper on his cycle. Been riding today also. Blackie jumped from top of tree.

Rainy. Thunderstorm in AM. Philadelphia started work on our road putting in fill. We went to city. Merrill took chopper parts to Coty’s machine shop. I got blue material for dress.

4-H County dress Review at Olympic Theater. We didn’t go as I was sick in bed all day with headache. Wrote June and Vern. Sent June $5. for birthday. Donna here in evening. Rupert Davis here to straighten shaft on chopper. Got thank you card from Kathy Ashley.

June’s 30th birthday. Rained all night and in AM. Merrill cleaned out milk house drain. Washed my hair. Last Rebekahs meeting for summer. Past Grands furnished covered dish supper. I didn’t stay to eat as I don’t feel too peppy yet today.

Sent Merrill’s accident insurance $20. Still raining and cloudy. Hay fields very wet. Jim came home for supper. He went scuba diving for first time. Lake very rough. Did Jim’s wash in evening.

Still raining. We went to city for chopper shaft, $12. Also groceries. Cleaned in PM. Jim here for supper. Came for his laundry. He works days next month. (July) Ronnie Barker was in accident this morning.

Some sunshine today for first in ages. Cloudy in evening. Washed. Merrill mowed all the lawns. Look nice. Washed my hair and put rinse on it. Baked 3 pumpkin bread, cup cakes, and 2 cakes. Woolworth Co. is building a huge store at the city.

Test run of huge 1000 passenger cargo plane in air. 1 hour and 40 minutes C-55. We didn’t go to church as we couldn’t get around in time. Church starts at 9 AM until September. We ate a picnic lunch at Talcott Falls and then went up to Marie’s.

Civil Service wage increase starts today. Thunder storm during night. Windy and very hot all day. Merrill went to city for parts for milking machine pump but could not get them. Got pine tar for cows food. Made myself blue shorts in evening.

Nice day. Merrill washed car. Surge men didn’t bring milking machine pump today. I baked pies. Jim here for supper. He is working days this month. Wednesday’s and Thursday’s off.

Bang! Bang! Cloudy in morning but sun out later on. Got milking machine pump from Howard. Merrill and Howard installed it. Toby here awhile. Gave him $10 wedding president. Vern, June, and Steve called in evening. they are coming Saturday. We went for ride in evening. Theresa, Mills, Kelsey Bridge.

Toby Morrow and Karen Leckerts wedding. Vern, June and boys came in PM. We went to wedding. Very nice. Donna Hall stayed with kids. Jim had to work but came to reception at 9:30. Merrill mowed first hay this year.

Vern, June and Steven left for Whiteface Mountain about 8:30 PM. Danny stayed with us. Merrill drawed first load of hay. Fan belt broke on tractor. We went to Alton’s. Jim left from here for work. Got his hair cut.

Kids left for Hall Road about 9:00 AM. I drove tractor on baler for first this year, about 200 bales in the barn. Very hot today. I dug out at end of walk etc. in evening. Dawn rode her bike over here twice alone.

Church Bar-B-Q. I helped on it. Very good crowd. I worked at window. Drawed 2 loads of hay. Rest too green. I stopped at Vi’s in evening and we went through Jack & Linda’s new home. Jim didn’t come home to help in haying today.

Don and Juanita’s 18th anniversary. 10 % sur tax starts today. Seaway strike us over. Lasted one month. Merrill mowed hay back on 17 acres. Drawed 2 loads from across road. Just a few bales yet to be baled. Jim home awhile in evening.

Donna, Sharon, Sue Demoor went to Beauty school in city and had our hair done. Cost me 90¢ for cut, shampoo, and set. Lorraine went with us also. Merrill drawed rest of hay. Part of load. He mowed more hay. Very hot, 89°. Washed Jim’s clothes. Did ironing. Merrill paid Paynes for spraying. Rained some in evening. Vern called.
