Diary Entry for 4/11/1968

4-H here. All here but Sharon, Cathy and Jeff. Practiced demonstrations and Betty cut out her dress. I went to city for groceries. Got beige pocketbook. Merrill built fence. Sent Easter cards and letters. Oren and Norma Gee flew home from Texas.

Good Friday. Washed my hair. A beautiful day, 71°. Merrill put up bird feeders. Washed. Got Easter cards from Vern’s. Eleanor called in evening. They are coming Sunday. Jim and Jim D came out in evening on cycles. Mom called in evening. Some of them are coming Sunday.

Easter Sunday, 80°. I went to 7 AM cantata. 3 choirs sang. Mom, Ken’s, Don’s kids, and Maureen Patchen here for dinner. Jim Bowman and Tom from Canada here for supper. Uncle Roy and Lila and Jim Ashley family here in PM. Jim went after Mom and Kids and took all but Mom and Doreen home. They stayed overnight.

4-H demonstration Days at Indian River School. I went with Donna, Lorraine. Terry got blue ribbons and Hal red. Merrill took Mom and Doreen home while I was at 4-H. I was a room hostess. Rainy in morning, colder. Past Grands at Elsie’s. 15 present.

Town of Philadelphia started working on our road. They are putting in sluices. I went to city for groceries. Got golf set for Steve and Sand toys for Danny. Percy Pratt’s family have a new Opal wagon. Boys came out on cycles in evening. Called kids in evening. Danny is walking.

We went to Vern and Junes’ for dinner. Jim and Rennie went also. A beautiful day. Blanch O’Brian called in evening. Wants staff to go to Tomacy’s Wed. night. I called some of staff. Vi has to have an operation.

Western show at Kingston. Toby, Karen, Jim, & Maureen went. Rebekahs banquet at Tomacy’s for 4 staffs from District to honor advisors. Freda, Paul, and Marjorie Laduke. 14 present. Vi, Esther, and Marguerite went with me. We came back in time for Lodge. I’m to be acting treas.

Vi goes into hospital for operation. Aunt Maude called in evening to say it was in tonight’s paper that Philip LeClair had committed suicide. Found him Thursday morning. They live in Walton, NY. Margaret is 26.

Boys came out on their cycles for breakfast. Also for supper. Jim got a new Suzuki cycle. $800. Got it last night. Mom called about Philip LeClair in evening. Jim Matteson came down in evening. Called Bill in evening. Vi had her operation at 8 AM

Philip LeClair’s funeral at Belleville. We went to church and then to Belleville for funeral. Uncle Ray and Aunt M. Went with us. Huge funeral. 12 from cycle club there on cycles. we stopped at Orv and Angie’s. White frost last night. Jim home in evening.

WSCS District Meeting at Carthage 10 AM. I didn’t go. I painted kitchen woodwork and inside of sink cupboard. Merrill made shelf for sink cupboard. I got Lodge books for Dist 3. Can’t get ritual as only lodges may have them. Rainy. Toby here in evening.

I went to hospital to see Vi. Shopped at Fay’s and Weston’s groceries. Got 3 pair sneakers $9.93. Got blue slacks and charcoal starter. Also wire lawn fence, 5 for 78¢

Vi got home from hospital. Merrill mowed lawns for first this year. I washed Jim’s clothes. Lorraine here after school to sew. Marge and Roger here in evening. Jim here in evening. Had been golfing with Kenny. Got letter from Marvin.

Martha asked me to be dress judge. Rainy. Boys came out on cycles in PM. Here for dinner and supper. They helped Toby take Star out doors for first since last fall. Merrill did ditching for Howard.

Beautiful summer day. Sent Mother’s Day cards. Wrote Mom. We went to city for groceries. Got new front tires at Sears. $23.00 for 2. Old one’s had bumps. Sears gave $13.00 refund on each. Got gifts for staff, candy dish. Got gold cloth for dress.

I was sewing judge at Philadelphia Grange all PM. Got home at 5:45 PM Jim and Rennie here all PM and for supper. Merrill mowed lawns. Did some of Jim’s wash in evening. Jim passed his police test. Nancy Smiley and Russell Maloy married today.

We went to Mills and city. Merrill got work shoes at Kinney’s. $12.39. I got cloth at Grants @ .59 for slip covers for couch and chairs. Made them in evening. Jim worked at Camp Drum firing range today.

Mother and Daughter banquet. Good turn out. Rev Beatrice Carr Clark guest speaker. I went down to Millicent’s and over to Evelyn’s. Evelyn not feeling too well. Rennie stopped by with 3 dishes for me. Got letter from June.

Production and Credit meeting at Philadelphia Methodist Church. We went. 73 present. Paid church $85.00. Had salad, rolls, pie, cheese, milk and coffee. Washed windows, curtains and blinds downstairs. Got invitation to initiation at Antwerp Rebekahs May 28th.

Turned cows out for first days. Finished cleaning living room and bedroom. Nettie Smith’s son Fred Pledger died yesterday of a heart attack. Decided to change Past Grands until the 27th so that we can go to Antwerp. Helen Keichels called to say dress judging will be June 4 with Antwerp clubs.

I took Vi to city for doctor’s appointment. We shopped. Cathy A here to sew in evening. Rebekahs went to funeral home for Nettie Smith’s son Fred Pledger. Cloudy and cold. Saw Reenie at Fays.

Armed Forces Day. Toby and Karen here for lunch and afternoon. Merrill and Toby mowed lawns. Worked on gold dress. Jim, Jim D, & Reenie here in evening. Got card from Uncle Berl. Ruth called and wanted me to go to church conference tomorrow.

Nice day. Planted flowers, tomatoes. Had picnic lunch. Toby and Karen here all PM. We didn’t go to church. Frank Smith is to be new pastor at Minetto. Turned cows out nights for first.

Initiation at Antwerp Lodge. Very nice. 14 from Philadelphia there. 50 present. I drove. Leah, Minnie, and Martha went with me. Got new Rebekahs ring. $3.95. Jim here in AM. Came to Theresa to see about insurance. Rained all last night and all day.

Wrote Vern’s. Howard & Merrill took bailer motor to Dick Ennes for overhaul. Waxed kitchen floor. Boys here awhile in evening. Mrs. Aubin brought me library cards. Wrapped gifts for staff. Candy dishes, green.

I went to city for groceries. Got new slip and bra at Grants. Merrill went to Mills in PM. We mowed lawns in PM and evening. Lawn mower broke. We went out to Weston’s in evening and bought new lawn mower. $59.99. Mom called in evening. Olive going to hospital. Arnold Castleman died.

Finished mowing lawn with new mower. Blackie the kitten got caught under it when we were starting it. Toby here for breakfast. They tried to clip Star’s hoofs but she wouldn’t let them in stall. Ted Mack’s 2 hour show on radio from this area. Marguerite called. Washed.

Beautiful day. We went to Church Board meeting after church. Merrill was usher today. Talked about painting church. Also about starting church at 9 or 9:30 for summer. I was asked by Rev. H to write up minutes. We had lunch at Gov. Went to Ogdensburg to see Aunt Cora. Visited Edna’s Hockey’s. [?]

Past Noble Grands Club here. 16 present. Eva and Lora Hanlon on with me but Lois was working at cemetery. Addie made her lemon sauce. Martha helped serve. Had salad, rolls, and angel food cake with sauce. Gave staff green candy dish. Vi, & Lois not here.
