Grandmother’s Diary…

Still thawing. Very cloudy all forenoon & very foggy tonight. Feeling horrid today.

Washed Merrill, Vernon, & my hair. They plowed the roads with the big plow & pushed back the banks. Still thawing.

Grand day. Real warm. Vernon was sick & couldn’t go to school. I went down to see Dr. Reed. Wants me to see Dr. George this week. Merrill got hair cut.

Feeling horrid. Dot & Evelyn was down. Dot stayed for supper & the evening. Merrill went over to Dads. Roy & Marg are down at Ken’s. Roy is working at Pierrepont Manor.

Raining & foggy. Snow going fast. Arlene was down. Got dog license. Colder tonight.

Merrill & Vernon went to Lorraine & got Ration Book 2. Received gas book for washing machine. Mom, Dad, Aunt Esther & Uncle Lloyd was up in evening.

Feeling terrible tonight. Dot, Arlene & Evelyn was down. Received card from Marie. Merrill mopped the kitchen floor for me. Vernon cleaned.

Been in bed all day. Quite stormy today.

Merrill & Vernon washed clothing & done other work for me. Got to go to Watertown tomorrow & how I dread it.

Merrill got me a box of candy. Went up to see Dr. George. He said he thought everything would be OK. [Expecting a baby] Went to Uncle Roy’s for supper. Called at Aunt Edna’s. Stormed so we couldn’t get home. Merrill & I stayed at Dads. Vernon stayed at Barkers.

Uncle Ed gave Vernon Donald Duck of Harlows. Came home from Dads. Vernon didn’t go to school. Have been in bed about all day. Dot & Evelyn was down. Plowed our road with new plow.

Feeling a little better today. Buster stopped in on way to woods. Received letter from Angie, also pictures.

Stormy again. Arlene came down in afternoon. Oren stopped in on way to woods.

Been in bed all day. Edith, Dot, & Arlene came down. Done my dishes for me.

Awfully stormy. Roads blocked. Vernon has done all the work today. Did not get our mail.

Still terrible stormy. All roads are blocked. Could not go with milk. Feeling a little better today.

Still no roads. Weather quite nice today. No mail, school bus, or milk truck. Don Moore is home on furlough.

Wind is blowing again today. Dot has been here all day doing my work. Arlene was down twice. Merrill has been helping the plow get over. Most all plows broke down. No school.

Vernon didn’t go to school. Arlene has been here all day. Ronnie’s birthday (4 years old) The men worked all night getting the road plowed. Took from 5:30 AM to 4:00 PM to get to Lacona. Got 4 days mail.

Dot came down & worked today. All roads are open now. No school bus. I made pies today. Feeling better.

Got True Story. Read all day. Not feeling so good. Quite warm today.

1st day in bed. Edith & Dot came down in evening for awhile. Vernon got his hair cut. Grand day. Been in bed all day. Dot has been here working all day. Got letter from Mom & from Aunt Lila.

Had Dr. Reed. Told me to stay in bed 6 weeks. Edith, Dot, Mom, Dad, Don & grandma was here during day & evening. Mom stayed up.

Mom went home tonight. Real warm. Men are shoveling out road ahead of plow. Mom washed clothes. Oren Jr. stopped in on way to woods. Dad went & got Mother Tryon & Aunt Lila to come.

Can get sugar. Merrill took beef over home to can. Dot was down. My cold is better

Got mattress for Vernon’s bed today.

Received cards from Florence D & Aunt Mildred. Evelyn was down.

Raining today. Aunt Lila went to Watertown with Buster today. Received card & letter from Angie. Beulah & Baxter [Macklin] are married.

Mother gave me new nightgown. Received letter from Aunt Myrtle. She can’t come. Merrill took mother Tryon home. Brought Mom back to stay. Got new bowls & stool. Evelyn was down.

Edith sent down a pumpkin pie for dinner. Marg & Roy were up for supper. Brought me books & card. Dad was up awhile. Mom made ice cream.

Edith, Dot, Evelyn & Arlene was down. Merrill’s birthday. 34 years old. Dr. Reed was here. Roy & Marg came tonight to stay. Dad & Buster was here. Dad, Merrill, Buster carried me down stairs.

Wrote letter to mom, Mother Tryon, & Aunt Edna. Received card from Aunt Edna. Watkins man was here. Got toothpaste & cod Liver Oil pills. Winifred Haggerty is married.

Wrote letter to Dr. George. Aunt Mildred & Angie. Marg baked pies. Feeling about the same. Wish I could get up.

Real warm. Let the hens out for first time. Roy didn’t come up tonight.

Cloudy. Received card & letter from Aunt Edna.

Received letter from Aunt Mildred. Roy came up to stay tonight. Marg popped corn. Mother Tryon called. Marg washed clothes.

Evelyn was down. Aunt Cora, Aunt Edna, Uncle Ed was here. Mother Tryon & Carl came to stay. Marg & Roy left today. Have been here since Monday evening.

Quite cold. Dot, Evelyn & Arlene was down. Carl & Vernon missed the school bus. Clocks were slow.

Snowing in morning. Raining in afternoon. Received invitation to shower for Marion Alexander. Also letter from Marg & Angie.

Arlene’s birthday. (16 years) Mother, Dad, Mach Caney, & Buster was here. Got a new dress. Grand spring day.

Raining hard. Dot, Evelyn, Buster was here. Oren came down in evening. Received cards from Fannie, Gertrude, Aunt Mildred & a letter from Betty.

Sent money to Spiegel for mattress. Raining hard in forenoon. Snowed in afternoon & evening. Real cold. Ken was up in evening.

Received letter from Aunt Cora & Dr. George. Buster stopped in on way to woods. Quite cold. I’ve got another cold. Been in bed 3 weeks today.

Edith, Evelyn, Dot & Dick was here. Merrill took Mother Tryon home. Don brought Aunt Mildred up to stay awhile.

Terrible cold & quite windy.

Still quite cold. Sent for shoes for Carl. Wrote letter to Dr. Reed.

Real nice today. Sent letter to Mom, Mother Tryon, Betty Hanson. Made $1.00 payment on paper. Dot, Evelyn & Oren was here. Mom & Dad was up in evening.

Marie’s & Richard C birthday. Cloudy day. Received card from Bert Pitkin’s family. Played Chinese Checkers in evening.

Real warm today. Oren stopped in on way to woods. Vernon went over home tonight to spend weekend.

Dad’s birthday. 51 years. I’ve been in bed four weeks today. Received card & letter from Aunt Maude.
