Grandmother’s Diary…

Arlene was down. Sent letter to Spiegel. Lowell Pooler has been wounded in France. Received the Purple Heart.

Sent letter to Angie. Went to Lorraine & over home in evening. Merrill & Vernon got hair cuts. Merrill went berrying. Got 15 quarts. Made jam.

Made rhubarb & orange jam. Got orders from Spiegel & Chicago Mail Order. Did Jimmy’s wash.

Sent airmail letter to Loren. Don & Arlene were here. Last day of fair. Went to Adams & Lorraine in evening. Got 1 gallon of Maytag oil. $1.40. Got first fly sprayer & spray.

Roy & Marg were up for dinner. Arlene was down. Ken & Eleanor were up in evening. Vernon went home with them.

Loren killed in action. [added later] Washed clothes. Canned 21 quarts tomatoes. Dot was down. Got card from Hasting.

Sent order to Spiegel. Raining. Got letter from Times. Dot & Evelyn were here. Don fixed Lonny’s car.

Went over home. Had threshers. Went to Mannsville. Lila came home with us. Stopped at Barkers. Arlene was here. Pigs got out but we got them again.

Went over home again. Went to Adams. Stopped at Aunt Mildred’s. Velma & Cherri was there from Kentucky. Dot, Arlene, Lila & us went to Beulah’s in evening.

Canned beans. Marg, Velma, Cherri & Evelyn were here in PM. Mother, Dad & Lila were up in evening. Our ad is in Times.

Arlene & Dot were down. Made Jimmy birthday cake. Washed & baked. Thunder storm in evening.

Cleaned cellar. Florence, Earle & kids were over. Gave Merrill & Vernon a shampoo.

Labor Day. Went to Fireman’s Day at Adams. Heard today George Moreton has been killed in France. Dad gave Jimmy shoes for his birthday.

School starts. Had an earthquake at 12:35 last night. 5.9 on the Richter scale. Quite bad at Massena. Raining. Vernon got home at noon. Dot & Arlene were here.

Gordon Caulkins & Dorothy Mattend are married. Edith, Dot, Evelyn & Arlene were down. Went to Lorraine & over home. Gave $1.00 for panties with elastic. Got letter from Doc. Overton.

Sent for battery & mantles. Arlene was down. Quite cold & cloudy.

Went to see Dr. Overton & stopped at Adams. Got overseas boxes for Fran & Loren. Set letter to Marion S. Arlene was here in evening.

Ironed clothes. Went to see Dr. Overton. Went to Ellisburg. Marion Rockwood is in hospital for appendicitis operation. Got 2 new blankets from Spiegel.

Merrill, Vernon & Jimmy went to church. Stopped over home for dinner. Went up to Marg’s in PM. Dot was down. Arlene starting in at Oswego. Merrill & I wrote letter to Loren.

Sent Airmail letter to Loren. Did big washing. Merrill cut corn at Rudd’s. Evelyn was here. U.S. Troops invade Germany. Mr. & Mrs. Roosevelt are in Canada.

Got dress shoes & sheets. Canned corn. Got True Story & letter from Times . Rainy & windy.

Went to Lacona & Sandy Creek with Dot, Evelyn & Edith. Waxed kitchen floor. Merrill took a couple to Watertown in night. Got $5.00. Oren was here. Truck stopped.

Did ironing. Rained all day. Winston Piper has been injured in France.

Dot & Arlene were down. Arlene came home from her first week of normal school. Merrill went up to father’s for gas.

Merrill filled silo at Rudd’s. Went to Adams & Lorraine. Stopped at Marg’s. Got Jimmy sleepers & Vernon’s birthday present.

Merrill dug 8 1/2 bushel of potatoes. Merrill & Vernon went & picked apples & milk weed pods. Jimmy & Vernon went up to Barkers.

Started cutting corn. Sent Xmas package to Loren & Francis. Marg sent me apples. Got bushel of pears $1.25. Dot was here. Frank Stone’s son-in-law killed in action in France.

Canned 20 quarts pears, 1 tomato, & 4 ketchup & 9 apple jelly. Got card from Arlene. Vernon is sick.

Vernon is still quite sick. Canned mincemeat & baked doughnuts, pie & cookies. Sent letter to Arlene, card to Mom. Dot was here.

Vernon’s birthday (8 years) Had chicken dinner. Made him cake. Dot & Evelyn were here. Got card from Marion Stillman. Oren gave Vernon a pencil.

Vernon went to school today. The folks got telegram today saying Loren had been killed in action on August 28. Went to Ellisburg in evening. Ronnie came home with us. Started filling silo. Got Xmas cards from Watkins man.

Vernon got card from Gloria. Got one from Ronnie yesterday. Ronnie & Vernon picked pop corn. 2 bushel.

Took Ronnie home. Stopped over home & at Hodges coming home. Basil Hanson is in hospital. Hurt with corn binder. Arlene was here.

Washed clothes. Not feeling very good. Jimmy & Vernon went up to Barkers.

Rained today. Went to Lorraine for stovepipes. Also went over home. Mother is feeling better.

Got letters from Marg & Angie. Dot was down. Lonny has infection in his hand. Isn’t working.

Evelyn quite ill with asthma. Had Dr. Went down to Ellisburg in evening. Got piece ready for paper. Dot was down.

Put linoleum down in living room. Vernon didn’t have to go to school. Teacher’s conference.

Beulah & Baxter have baby girl. Beverly Jane. Dot & Arlene was down. The piece & picture was in the paper about Loren. Went to Lorraine in evening. Merrill got new shirt. $1.74

Merrill put up living room stove. Went out to Uncle Earle’s in PM. Marion, Helen & Dad’s were there also.

Sent card & letter to Beulah. Washed clothes. Dot was here. Brought one lamp shade. Sent $23.22 to Spiegel. Also order[ed]. Canned mincemeat & tomato juice.

Got letter from Aunt Mildred. Kids got birthday gift. Sent card to Mother T. & Arlene.

Got announcement card from Beulah. Dot & Evelyn were down. Evelyn is feeling better. Wrote to Marg & Ration Board. Vernon sent card to Aunt Mildred.

Dug 3 bushel potatoes. The Lorraine parsonage caught fire today.

Dot & Evelyn were here. Ward Holly reported killed in action in France, August 28. Same day as Loren.

Wallace was here with apples. Dot took me down to see Dr. Reed. Same old trouble in my side. Finished filling silo. Sent letter to [for] ad. Merrill went to Ellisburg.

Merrill finished digging potatoes. Had 16 bushel all together. Vernon gathered vegetables. Feeling pretty punk.

Got new shoes, shirt & sweater. Raining. They started digging potatoes. Feeling better. Made cookies.

Sent letter to Beulah. Dot was down. Went to Lorraine & over home in evening.

Kathryn Rockwood’s birthday (2 years) & Baxter’s birthday (21 years). Edith, Dot Evelyn, Jimmy & I went up to Beulah’s. Saw Beverly for first time.
